A well not far from Tanfield (at a place now called Well) that dated back to Roman times was dedicated to St Michael by the local Saxons.

It is reputed that an enormous dragon once dwelt by the well terrorizing the villagers.

It was a local hero of the Latimer family who killed a dragon and the Latimers have born a dragon on their coat of arms ever since.
