St Leonard was a hermit who lived in the sixth century. In the nearby forest dwelt a dragon and all manner of serpents, and one day St Leonard set forth into the forest, slew the dragon, and expelled all the serpents. He also expelled all the nightingales as they disturbed his prayers.
