St Leonards Forest

St Leonard was a hermit who lived in the sixth century. In the nearby forest dwelt a dragon and all manner of serpents, and one day St Leonard set forth into the forest, slew the dragon, and expelled all the serpents.

He also expelled all the nightingales as they disturbed his prayers. This act is remembered today in the south west of the forest where there is a place called Dragon's Green, though the forest has shrunk a lot since those days.
