Nunnington

In order to kill a troublesome dragon which dwelt in the River Rye, Peter Loschy had a suit of armour made studded with blades.

When he advanced on the dragon the creature threw its coils around him and was cut to pieces. However the dragon had regenerative powers and as soon as it was cut into pieces, the pieces rejoined themselves. The situation was saved by Peter's dog who carried the pieces onto Loschy Hill (near East Newton) thus preventing the dragon from reassembling itself.

Eventually only the head was left but the dog went too close and was poisoned by the dragon's venom. The dragon died. Peter de Loschy was commemorated in the form of an effigy of a knight cross-leggedin an arched recess in the wall of Nunnington Church.
