A formidable dragon took up residence on a local hill called Sexhowe, not far from the village.

Every day it demanded the milk of nine cows, and every night it kept the villager awake with its incessant snoring.

Its breath was so foul and venemous that anyone who came near it fell down dead. Eventually, a passing knight came forth to fight the dragon, and after a vicious struggle he killed it and departed without asking for reward or leaving his name.

The corpse of the dragons was skinned by the locals and this was then displayed in the church at Stokesley. The skin has since rotted away.
