At the start of the fifteenth century a dragon appeared at a ford on the River Stour.  
In 1405 a vast dragon appeared, with a crested head and saw like teeth.  


It devoured many wayfarers until Sir Bertram de Haye killed it by felling a tree onto the beast.  
Archers were summoned from nearby Colchester but their arrows merely bounced off the dragon's hide. However the Dragon upon being assaulted fled, never to be seen again.  


Another story tells how the creature was slain by Sir George Marney using his lance. Perhaps this is what became of the dragon who fled from the archers at nearby ���Bures.
Given the tales of a dragon appearing at nearby [[Wormingford]] it might seem that the dragon did not last long.
