The earthworks and stone circles at Avebury were interpreted by the early modern Druids as a great serpent temple.
They saw the double row of standing stones which ran 'through' the larger circle as representing their ancient Druidical symbol of the serpent and egg.
As
if in a rejection of this belief, the font in the church shows a bishop spearing the head of one serpent whilst another snaps at his feet.
